Tips for Securing Your Computer

For Microsoft Windows users, the easiest way to patch your operating system is to visit the http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com site. A shortcut to get there is to choose "Windows Update" from the Tools menu in Internet Explorer. It doesn't hurt to visit that site weekly.

If you have an anti-virus program, keep the virus definitions updated. Most likely you'll have to pay for a subscription. If you don't have an anti-virus program already, get one. There are free anti-virus programs with free updated virus definitions out there--a commonly used one is AVG Antivirus, found at http://www.grisoft.com.

Finally, run anti-spyware program regularly if you surf many sites, especially sites that are not from lesser-known less well-established companies. Two free anti-spyware programs are Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search and Destroy. Both can be found at http://www.download.com.
